Grocery Delivery Onboarding
Thank you for your interest in volunteering!
Home-Delivered Groceries is a weekly grocery delivery service for seniors, adults with disabilities, pregnant women, and families with children age 3 and younger who face challenges in attending one of our 270+ food pantries.
Each week, you help us bring fresh food to the doorstep of over 10,000 neighbors and we could not do it without you. For more information, watch a video about the program here and read about a volunteer’s experience here!

Rider (passenger) set-up:
We are happy to have additional volunteers. Pairing up to volunteer helps with navigating directions, parking, and dividing up deliveries if there are several in one building. If you plan to bring a rider, please help us make sure they have a volunteering account, a signed release form, and are signed up for a one-time RIDER registration.
Here are the quick steps to set up riders:
- Create a volunteering account
- In qualifications section, please sign release form and answer vaccination status. Minors will have a guardian sign for them.
- Please add yourself to the county group where you plan to volunteer: San Francisco and/or Marin. This will allow you to register as a rider.
- Respond only once to the rider opportunity in the county you plan on volunteering: San Francisco and/or Marin.
- When the driver registers for a shift, they will use the Notes Field to note rider's Full Name: "Rider is Jane Doe". This will help us check all riders in and capture their volunteer service in their accounts.
- If you have questions, please let us know.
What is Adopt-a-Building?
In an effort to increase our delivery efficiency and to provide a better experience for both recipients and volunteers, we are currently looking for dedicated volunteers to make all deliveries in one building or "adopt-a-building". By adopting a route or building, you can deliver groceries and build relationships with neighbors on a set route each week. With routes available all over SF and Marin, you may even be able to deliver groceries to community members in your own neighborhood. To learn more, please fill out this form.
What will volunteers be doing?
The Home-Delivered Groceries (HDG) volunteer opportunity will involve:
- Picking up pre-packed bags of groceries (about 24 lbs. each) at the Illinois warehouse in San Francisco (1050 Marin St. San Francisco, CA 94124) OR at our Marin warehouse in San Rafael (2550 Kerner Blvd).
- Making deliveries to approx. 15-20 pantry participants.
When do the deliveries happen?
In San Francisco, we have 3-hour delivery shifts Tuesday through Saturday, with start times between the hours of 9:00 am – 2:30 pm. In Marin, we have a handful of shifts only on Fridays starting from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.
Where will my deliveries be? Can I choose where I want to deliver?
When you sign-up for a delivery shift, you will sign-up for either Marin deliveries or SF deliveries (or both). We ask that volunteers signing up for San Francisco deliveries are aware and understand that they may be assigned to deliver anywhere in the city including deliveries in Chinatown, Sea Cliff, Vis Valley, or the Tenderloin.
What protocols does the Food Bank have in place to protect volunteer safety?
We are working to strike a balance between keeping our community safe while also providing the essential service of getting food to those who need it. We encourage you to consider your own health before deciding to volunteer. We recommend washing/sanitizing your hands regularly, avoiding touching your face, and staying home if you feel sick. We will be packing the groceries in single-use grocery bags for everyone’s safety. Lastly, when making the deliveries, we advise that volunteers ring the doorbell/knock on the door, place the groceries down in front of the door, and take a few steps back to allow for the recommended 6 ft of social distancing. When the participant opens the door and sees the groceries, volunteers can wave, say hello, and then move onto the next delivery.
We are here to help!
